Blogging as 5-Year Journal
“…For it has no virtue that we know of, save perhaps to sweeten a fouled air, or to drive away some passing heaviness.” — Lord of the Rings
It has been a long time since I wrote on here — almost a year — and over three years since I was writing regularly. I miss journalling our homeschool days, and I would like to get back to it.
A couple of months ago I got interested in the idea of a five year journal. And this one called Jane-a-Day, with quotes by Jane Austen, is perfectly charming. Still, browsing through this old blog, I realized I already basically have a 5 year journal. The electronic format makes it easy to go back to a certain month in the archives, and a matter of a moment to see what we were doing a year, 3 years, 6 years ago — IF I wrote that day.
And it’s easy to find quotes!
I want to quickly reintroduce our family, since time hasn’t stood still in the 3 years since I was last writing regularly.
Our oldest is now 26, graduated from college, and working as a computer game programmer up in Oregon.
Our second is now 24 and going to college in Oregon. The two share an apartment.
Our only daughter is going into her senior year at Thomas Aquinas College.
The next son is 19, graduated from an eclectic highschool experience (he was the first and so far only child to spend part of his highschool years in “building school”). He will be going to city college this year.
The next one is 16 and going into his junior year. He’s the oldest of the kids still being homeschooled.
Then comes the 13 year old who is technically in 7th grade but works on about a second grade level. He just went to his annual therapy clinic and the doctor and therapists were exclaiming at how well he was doing considering his medical history. And they enrolled him in Make A Wish! Amazingly, we haven’t ever registered him before, though he qualifies in spades. But now he is old enough to actually choose something he would want.
Our youngest is going to be 10 years old soon.
We have a small computer game business and my husband Kevin freelances for larger companies and works out of the home.
